Why did God place us in earthly bodies?

He knew it would slow us down. It feels like a ball and chain keeping us from moving forward as we could. Couldn't He place us in heaven when He created us instead of placing us here on this awful place full of pain and heartache? I'm so tired of hurting in this body full of emotions and temptations. Didn't He know we would have troubles or doesn't He care?
