Trying to re-install Windows XP and get "File PCMCIA.SYS is corrupted?

My Dell Laptop recently went out on me. After starting I only have an option for F2 or F12..F8 will not work. If I don't press anything it immediately goes into an old DOS screen where I cannot type anything it just sits there. I am now trying to re-install windows XP and start from scratch. I downloaded the Windows CD from a friends server and I have it setup to boot from CD. It installs and goes through the motions until I get the error message "File PCMCIA.SYS is corrupted press any key to restart" I cannot get past this. Any help would be much appreciated. I am not that computer savvy. Thanks.
