Sock Monkeys in Germany?

I have a penpal in Germany. He sent me some German Christmas ornaments a while ago, and I saw a cute, small, sock monkey ornament here at work. I know this seems strange, but I know many kids in the US have sock monkey stuffed animals, but do people in Germany know about them? Or is it kinda like a US thing? I wanted to send him something USA-ish, without it being a hot dog or 30lbs of fat. :P
